- John K.’s Theory: Claire, Christian and Jacob’s Cabin - Over at BuddyTV, I just posted an extended discussion of my Compass Paradox Theories that you guys got first. But I also added in some additional thoughts about time travel.
My newest theory goes like this: I posit that the survivors unstuck in time possess the capability to carry objects or people with them through the time jumps if they are touching them, but that if they are not being touched during the next time jump, they are forever stuck in that time.
If this theory is true, I believe that this explains why Christian Shephard’s body and Claire both went missing on the Island - they were taken during a time jump. I then believe that they were taken way back to the time when Jacob first came to be and so they’ve been taken in by him as his minions or servants, hence their appearance in his cabin.
What do you think? A little too crazy, or am I on to something?
Feel free to check out my original article for more details on this theory.
- John K.’s Theory: The Compass Paradoxes - When I first watched the season 5 premiere, I loved the scene where Richard Alpert gave John Locke the compass. Not only was it a callback to one of the objects presented to a young Locke by Alpert in the Dalai Lama test from “Cabin Fever,” but it also featured the hilarious deadpan response of “It points North.”
However, the more I think about it, the more I’m troubled by the presence of the compass. I love time travel, but the compass raises two very real paradoxes.
1. How Does It Jump?
Sawyer and Juliet theorized that because people were on the Zodiac during the first time jump, it is now jumping with them. But since they weren’t on it during subsequent jumps, but it was still with them, it must now be permanently jumping with them.
However, the compass Alpert gave Locke did not go with them during the first jump. However, when Richard gave it to John, Locke carried it with him through the next time jump. If it was fixed in time before that, this means that any object can be carried through any time jump. Either that, or it means the compass has special qualities like Desmond.
But if it’s true that the survivors can carry objects with them through time so long as they’re holding them, this could change a lot. Maybe during one jump, Sawyer hugs Claire and so the reason she vanished was that she was brought into the time jumps.
2. What Is The Compass’ Origin?
Alpert gave John the compass, saying that the next time they meet, he should give it back. Theoretically, this means Alpert will get the compass from John and John got the compass from Locke, but there is no origin point for the compass.
The compass would be locked in a never-ending loop, a Mobius strip of time. The compass has no origin outside of this loop, which begs the question: where did it come from?
I have no idea if either of these concerns are ones the writers will address, or if they’re my personal qualms about the realities of time travel. But much like the four-toed statue, I will be thinking about these paradoxes and questions until they’re answered.
- Easter Eggs for “Because You Left” and “The Lie” - A new season of Lost means brand new Easter Eggs!
Now in easy-to-view slideshows, we offer updates on tiny details and smaller facts about last night’s episode you may not have picked up on first glance.
For the first episode, there are the Numbers, details on the Arrow Station, and my new favorite game, "When Are They?" This is the latest Lost craze I’m trying to invent where fans use context clues about the established timeline on the Island to pinpoint when in time the castaways are. You may be surprised to learn how precisely we can pinpoint when they jumped to.
Easter Eggs for "Because You Left">>
The second episode didn’t have as many Eggs, but there were more Numbers, numerous callbacks to past episodes.
- John K.’s Theory: Why Ms. Hawking is Faraday’s Mom - OK, now that everyone has seen these brilliant episodes, it’s time to deconstruct them. As soon as I finished watching these episodes the first time back at the end of December (I’ve since rewatched each about 10 times), I suspected the mother Daniel Faraday told Desmond to seek was Ms. Hawking.
Annd with every viewing, that feeling gets stronger and stronger. Let’s examine the evidence.
1-Faraday’s mom is from Oxford. Ms. Hawking has a British accent.
2-Faraday time jumps before he’s able to tell Desmond his mother’s name. Since saying her name wouldn’t be valuable unless it was something other than Faraday, I assume it is.
3-Charlotte mentioned that she couldn’t remember her mother’s maiden name. While this could be random, I assume it was a very subtle clue by the writers telling us that Faraday’s mother uses her maiden name, which is Hawking.
4-Faraday says his mom is the only one who can help, so presumably she must be skilled in the theories of time travel. Based on what we’ve seen, there’s no one more knowledgeable in the field than Ms., Hawking.
5-Why else would the show bring back an incredibly minor character like Ms. Hawking in the final scene of the premiere unless she was going to play a major role in the season? Similarly, since Faraday appeared in the very first scene, it’s not too crazy to state he will also play a major role in this season. It would make sense that the two are connected.
So have I convinced you, or does anyone out there have an alternate theory about Daniel Faraday’s mother? And di I miss any pieces of evidence? Let me know what you think about this theory.
I’ll be back throughout the week with more ideas about the episodes, including why I think the Oceanic 6 really need to go back to the Island and who is the mystery client trying to see if Kate and Aaron are related.
